Restore livelihoods in Somaliland
On the first day of Ramadan 2022, a huge fire tore through Waaheen Market in Somaliland’s capital Hargeisa. Residents and traders lost everything.
The fire destroyed the market, nearby shops, and commercial buildings. Today a large part of the city lies in ruins with an estimated $1.5-$2bn worth of damages.
Thousands of people lost their businesses, jobs and livelihoods. Most of these businesses were managed or owned by women. The effects of this fire represent an extreme economic shock for Somaliland.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the situation of food and livestock in Somalia?
The significant loss of crops and livestock has left many people struggling to secure enough food to survive, leading to a staggering 55% increase in the number of severely malnourished children being admitted to clinics. The situation is dire, and families are facing unprecedented challenges in accessing basic necessities such as food, water, and medical care.
How is AFH providing access to clean water and sanitation?
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene is one of the main drivers of humanitarian need in Somalia. An estimated 6.4 million people lack sufficient access to water with many increasingly using unclean water sources. Because of this, livestock are dying at an enormous rate, driving hunger, disease, and death.
By focusing on direct-to-community support, we’ve planted the seeds for long-term impact in Somalia that will last for generations to come. Nearly 15,000 people benefitted from our projects in Somalia in 2022, and with your help, that number will only grow.
How can you help Somalia?
Somaliland already battles drought conditions, which have devastated communities throughout the Horn of Africa. In February, the United Nations estimated that drought had impacted over 800,000 people in Somaliland stressing the need for urgent humanitarian support for those affected.
