MERAJ BIBI'S STORY

This is Meraj Bibi’s story, a mother who lost her home and newborn during the floods, and is now rebuilding her life with support this Ramadan.

MERAJ LOST HER HOME TO THE FLOODS. NOW SHE HOLDS HER FAMILY TOGETHER.

“Before Ramadan began, we were extremely worried about how we would manage during the holy month.”

When the floods reached our village in Roghwala Basti, they came early in the morning. I was sitting on a charpoy with my newborn when neighbours warned us the water was rising.

Within moments, everything changed. We tried to escape with what little we could carry, but most of our belongings were swept away. We climbed onto a rescue boat, but it capsized. In that moment, we thought we would not survive. We were rescued, but my newborn daughter was pulled from the water much later. She did not survive. That night, I buried my child with my own hands. Since then, life has been a daily struggle.

My husband works at a brick kiln, earning 400–500 rupees a day. It is not enough to provide for our family. Our eldest son, only nine years old, works alongside him instead of going to school. Some days, we do not have enough food for two meals. During Ramadan, we have broken our fast with dry bread, or simply salt and tea without milk.

Before Ramadan this year, we did not know how we would manage. Now, with the food pack we received, we can prepare proper meals and observe our fast with dignity. It will support our family for several weeks and ease a burden we have carried for so long. We are grateful for this support. It has made a difference in our lives when we needed it most.

What's Going On?

Meraj Bibi’s story reflects a wider crisis unfolding across Pakistan. Floods have left millions of people without stable homes, income, or access to food. For many families, the struggle did not end when the waters receded, it continues every day.
