Supporting Children with Down Syndrome

SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH DOWN'S SYNDROME

Helping children with Down's Syndrome access the care, confidence, and community they need to thrive.

Supporting Children with Down Syndrome

In Syria, years of conflict and instability have left many families struggling to access even the most basic healthcare services. For children with Down syndrome, the challenges are often even greater. Limited access to specialised medical care, therapy, education, and psychosocial support can leave children isolated and families feeling overwhelmed.

Through a new initiative launched by Action For Humanity, families are now gaining access to specialised support, safe spaces, and opportunities for their children to grow and thrive.

Building on the impact of the Syria programme, Action For Humanity is also working to expand this support into Pakistan, Palestine, and Yemen, helping more children and families access the care and inclusion they deserve.

Integrated Support for Children and Families

The project offers specialised medical consultations, including cardiac, ophthalmic, auditory, and dental examinations. Children also receive speech and language support through a part time speech therapist, alongside psychosocial activities delivered by trained staff.

Activities include:

+Speech and language development sessions

+Art, music, and drama activities

+Recreational games and group learning

+Educational support to encourage independence and teamwork

+Caregiver awareness and parenting sessions

+Access to referral pathways and medical consultations

The project also provides children with educational gifts, drawing materials, and learning resources to continue activities at home.

Alongside direct support for children, families are given the opportunity to attend weekly caregiver sessions focused on child development, stress management, and positive parenting techniques.

Supporting Children with Down Syndrome in Syria

A First of Its Kind Project in Raqqa

In what is considered one of the first projects of its kind in Raqqa Governorate, Action For Humanity has launched a dedicated programme to support children with Down syndrome and their families.

The project creates a safe and inclusive environment where children can receive healthcare, psychosocial support, educational activities, and opportunities to build confidence and social connections.

Implemented through Action For Humanity’s Protection Centre at Raqqa Maternity Hospital, the programme supports approximately 20 to 30 children with Down syndrome through structured weekly sessions focused on communication, emotional wellbeing, life skills, and social inclusion.

Supporting Children with Down Syndrome

For many families, this is the first time they have felt seen and supported.

One mother, whose 14 year old son Abdullah has Down syndrome, shared how important the project has been for his family:

“This is the first project here that cares for people with Down syndrome like Abdullah. Many thanks to them for remembering these children through this project.”

She explained how the activities have helped her son learn positive behaviour, stimulate his mind through games, and build happiness and confidence through drawing and educational activities.

The family also benefited from medical consultations with specialist doctors, something that had previously been difficult to access.

“Abdullah and the other children felt that there were people beyond their families who cared about them.”
