Understanding the calendar

What is the Hijri calendar?

The Hijri calendar, also called the Islamic calendar, is a lunar calendar made up of 12 months. It is used by Muslims around the world to mark religious occasions, including Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Its years are counted from the Hijrah, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. You will often see Hijri years written with “AH”, meaning Anno Hegirae, or “after the Hijrah”.

Why does the Hijri date change each year?

A Hijri year is about 354 or 355 days long, roughly 10 to 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. This is why Ramadan and other Islamic occasions move through the seasons over time.

Good to know: Hijri dates begin at sunset in Islamic tradition, while a conventional Gregorian calendar day begins at midnight. If you're checking the date for a religious observance, follow your local mosque or recognised religious authority.

Hijri months follow the lunar cycle. They are usually 29 or 30 days long, and their English spellings can vary slightly from one source to another.

A note on accuracy

Why might your local Hijri date be different?

Not every country or community starts a Hijri month on the same date. Some follow local moon sightings, others use announcements from a particular authority, and some use calculated calendars.

This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar developed and used by Saudi Arabia to determine dates and months. It is useful for everyday date look-ups, but it is not a substitute for local religious announcements about the start of Ramadan, Eid or other observances.

Your questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

What is today's Hijri date?

You'll find today's calculated Islamic date directly below the converter at the top of this page. It updates using your device's current local date. Your community's observed date may differ.

Can I convert a Hijri date into a Gregorian date?

Yes. Select “Hijri → Gregorian”, enter the Hijri day, month and year, then choose “Convert date”. The tool will show the corresponding Gregorian date.

Is this Hijri date converter free?

Yes. You can convert dates, check today's calculated Islamic date and copy results without creating an account or paying anything.

Why can Hijri dates differ by one day?

The start of a Hijri month may be determined by moon sighting, official announcements or a calculated calendar. Different methods and locations can lead to different dates, particularly around Ramadan and Eid.

How many days are in a Hijri year?

Most Hijri years have 354 days, while some have 355. A Gregorian year normally has 365 days or 366 in a leap year, so Islamic dates move earlier each Gregorian year.

Does the Islamic day begin at midnight?

Traditionally, the Islamic day begins at sunset. For ease of use, this converter maps a selected Gregorian calendar date to the calculated Hijri date shown for that civil day. For sunset-sensitive observances, refer to your local community's guidance.
