How SMART Housing Is Helping Families Recover in Pakistan

A home should be a place of safety. But for families living in areas repeatedly affected by floods and extreme weather, rebuilding after disaster can mean returning to many of the same risks. In Multan, South Punjab, Action For Humanity is taking a different approach. We have completed a new cluster of 10 climate-resilient, solar-powered homes, helping families affected by flooding rebuild their lives in a community designed with the future in mind.

The project is part of a wider approach to recovery in Pakistan, one that looks beyond replacing what has been lost and considers how communities can become safer and more resilient when the next emergency comes.

Why Rebuilding Differently Matters

Pakistan is highly exposed to climate-related disasters. Flooding can destroy homes and livelihoods, while extreme heat and other climate pressures continue to affect communities across the country. For families with limited resources, the consequences can last long after the immediate emergency has passed. Losing a home can mean losing security, possessions, income and the foundations on which family life depends.

Humanitarian assistance can help people through the immediate aftermath, but recovery presents another challenge. If vulnerable homes and infrastructure are simply rebuilt in the same way, communities can remain exposed to many of the same risks. That is why our approach in Multan has been designed around resilience as well as recovery.

10 New SMART Homes Completed in Multan

In Jalalpur Pir Wala, District Multan, Action For Humanity has completed a cluster of 10 climate-resilient homes, creating a safer and more sustainable community for families affected by flooding.

The homes are powered by solar energy, providing families with a reliable and sustainable source of electricity, while solar street lighting helps create safer shared spaces after dark. Climate-resilient drainage has also been incorporated to help the community better manage future flooding, while access to safe water supports the health and wellbeing of families.

Dedicated recreation areas and a community mosque provide spaces where neighbours can meet, children can play and community life can grow. Each element serves a purpose because rebuilding after disaster is about more than providing somewhere to sleep. Families need water, energy, safe surroundings and functioning infrastructure. They need a place where they can begin rebuilding the rest of their lives.

From Immediate Relief to Long-Term Recovery

When disaster strikes, Action For Humanity works to respond to urgent needs, but our support does not have to end when the immediate emergency does. The journey from crisis to recovery can take months or years, and communities need different forms of support at different stages.

Our approach is to mobilise when an emergency happens, respond to immediate needs and help communities restore what has been lost, while strengthening their resilience for the future. In Pakistan, that means looking at how humanitarian action can help families become less vulnerable to future shocks.

SMART Housing is one example of what that can look like. Rather than simply replacing homes damaged by flooding, the project combines shelter with safe water, renewable energy, drainage and shared community infrastructure. The result is more than 10 new houses. It is a safer place for families to rebuild their lives with greater security and dignity.
