When Healthcare Fails: Restoring Mobility for Amputees in Gaza
For many people in Gaza, the impact of conflict does not end when the fighting stops. Injuries, displacement, and limited access to healthcare continue to affect daily life long after the initial trauma has passed.
Through Action For Humanity's Restoring Mobility and Independence Programme, people living with amputations are receiving prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation support to help them regain mobility and independence.
Among those supported are Sobhi and Abdulraouf, two fathers and grandfathers whose lives changed dramatically following injury and illness.
A New Beginning After Loss
Sobhi lives with his family in a displacement camp in Gaza City after being forced from his home in Shuja’iyya.
For years, Sobhi lived with diabetes and other chronic health conditions, including heart problems and vision difficulties. Managing these conditions became increasingly difficult as Gaza's healthcare system came under immense strain.
Diabetes medication was not consistently available, while access to specialist care and hospital treatment became severely limited. As his condition worsened, complications led to the amputation of his right leg and the loss of several toes on his remaining foot. What might have been preventable with timely access to medication and treatment ultimately became a life-saving medical necessity.
Through Action For Humanity's rehabilitation programme, Sobhi received a prosthetic limb alongside specialist support before and after fitting. The programme helped him relearn how to walk and adapt to his new circumstances.
Today, Sobhi is able to move around more independently and spend more time with his family, helping him regain a sense of normality amid ongoing uncertainty.
Rebuilding Independence After Injury
Abdulraouf is a respected member of his community and a father and grandfather living in Al-Shati Camp in Gaza City. Known for his role in community mediation and reconciliation efforts, Abdulraouf spent many years working in construction before conflict changed his life. After being displaced during the war, he sustained a serious injury to his left leg when a nearby home was bombed.
Despite medical efforts to save the limb, amputation became unavoidable. The injury affected every aspect of daily life, making simple tasks more difficult and increasing his reliance on others for support.
Through Action For Humanity's programme, Abdulraouf received a prosthetic limb and comprehensive rehabilitation support designed to help him recover and adapt. The support helped him move around more independently and return to activities that had become difficult following his amputation.
More Than a Prosthetic Limb
A prosthetic limb can help someone walk again, but its impact reaches much further. It can help a parent care for their family, a grandparent spend time with loved ones, or an individual regain confidence in daily life.
Across Gaza, thousands of people are living with serious injuries, chronic illnesses, and disabilities while healthcare services remain under immense pressure. Shortages of medication, specialist care, and medical equipment continue to affect people's ability to access treatment when they need it most.
Rehabilitation support helps bridge part of that gap, enabling people to regain mobility, independence, and confidence despite the challenges they face.
