When the Extreme Heat Becomes a Humanitarian Crisis

As temperatures rise around the world, millions of people facing conflict and displacement have nowhere to escape the heat.

Here in the UK, many of us are searching for ways to stay cool. We open windows, switch on fans, drink cold water, or find shade until the hottest part of the day has passed. But for millions of people around the world, extreme heat is far more than an inconvenience. It is another layer of an already devastating humanitarian crisis.

Across Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Sudan, Syria and other countries where Action For Humanity works, families displaced by conflict are living in tents and temporary shelters that become unbearably hot under the summer sun. Many have little access to electricity, limited clean water, and few ways to escape the rising temperatures. For countless families, this is not simply another hot day. It is another day of survival.

When Conflict Meets Climate

Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events across the world. For communities already affected by conflict, poverty and displacement, these conditions can quickly become life-threatening.

Extreme heat increases the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and illness, particularly for young children, older people, pregnant women, and those living with disabilities or long-term health conditions.
Overcrowded camps become even more difficult places to live. Limited sanitation and water shortages can increase the spread of disease, while healthcare services already under immense pressure face even greater challenges.

For many families in Gaza, this is now their third consecutive summer living in displacement, enduring extreme temperatures with little protection from the elements.

Clean Water Saves Lives

When temperatures rise, access to clean water becomes more important than ever.
Safe drinking water helps prevent dehydration, supports good hygiene, and protects families from waterborne diseases. Yet in many of the communities we serve, accessing clean water remains one of the biggest daily challenges.

Action For Humanity continues to respond through a range of water projects designed to meet both immediate needs and create lasting impact. Across countries including Gaza, Pakistan, Syria and Yemen, our teams provide clean drinking water through water trucking, hand pumps, solar-powered water systems, water wells, and other sustainable solutions that help communities access safe water closer to home.
Our projects do more than provide water. They help protect health, restore dignity, and strengthen communities against future challenges.

Standing Alongside Communities

Despite conflict, displacement and the growing impact of climate change, Action For Humanity's teams continue delivering life-saving support where it is needed most.

Alongside clean water, we provide emergency healthcare, rehabilitation services, shelter, food assistance, and support for displaced families living through some of the world's most challenging humanitarian crises.
As temperatures continue to rise around the world, our commitment remains unchanged. Because no family should have to choose between finding shelter from the heat and finding safe water to drink.

As the UK experiences soaring temperatures, Dr Shameela reflects on what extreme heat means for families living through conflict and displacement, and why access to clean water and humanitarian assistance has never been more important.
