Who Must Pay Zakat?
Every person who is sane, an adult (reached puberty), Muslim and sahib-un-nisab must pay Zakat as a duty. To be a sahib-un-nisab means you possess more wealth than the level of nisab for a period of one lunar year or more.
What Type Of Wealth Is Zakat Due On?
Assets that are included in the Zakat calculation are cash, shares, pensions, gold and silver, business goods and income from investment property.
When Should I Pay My Zakat?
You should pay your Zakat when your money has passed the Nisab threshold, over a full Islamic lunar year. Your Zakat is calculated based on your personal wealth and is often paid in Ramadan, the month of greatest reward.
Can I Pay My Zakat In Installments?
It is of popular scholarly opinion that Zakat must be paid without delaying it unless there is a valid reason to do so. If one is unable to pay the Zakat in one payment then you may be able to pay in instalments, such as monthly, as long as the total amount due is paid.
Where Should Zakat Be Distributed?
Zakat can be paid to deserving individuals or groups who fall into one or more of eight zakatable categories designated by God in the Quran, such as the needy or poor.
What Does One Do About Missed Zakat Payments?
If you have missed Zakat payments over the years, then you must make a calculated estimate of the Zakat missed for each year and pay it accordingly.
